An oral restriction — otherwise known as tongue tie (ankyloglossia), lip tie or buccal tie — restricts the normal movement and function of the tongue and mouth.
Research shows that up to 10 percent of babies are born with an oral restriction and up to 25 percent of nursing infants can be affected by shallow latch caused by this condition.
An oral restriction can cause several issues that start to show the first signs in infancy, such as difficulties with breastfeeding, acid reflux/GERD, clogged ducts, incomplete feeds, or lip blisters on your baby — just to name a few.
Symptoms continue to worsen into childhood and adulthood if left untreated, including behavioral issues like ADD/ADHD, mouth breathing, sleep apnea, mental health issues and many more.
The term oral dysfunction encompasses a broad array of conditions that impair the normal and healthy function of the face and mouth. If you have oral dysfunction you may experience difficulty moving the jaw, lips, cheeks or tongue.
For example, orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) can affect people of all ages, from newborns to senior citizens, for a variety of reasons. Whatever the root cause, orofacial disorders interfere with the function of the muscles of the face and mouth. This can have disastrous effects on your physical and mental health.
The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes Early Childhood Caries (ECC) as a significant public health problem among preschool-age children.
A child fits the definition of ECC if:
they are between 0-6 years of age
they have one or more decayed, missing, or filled tooth surfaces in any primary tooth (also known as a “baby” tooth or “milk” tooth)
Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is so widespread that it is often considered the #1 chronic disease among kids in the world. The World Health Organization estimates that dental caries affect between 60-90% of schoolchildren (and most adults) in industrialized countries.
If untreated, tooth decay can lead to serious, painful, and even life-threatening conditions such as massive infections, a compromised airway and blood clots.
By ensuring a steady stream of air to your system, a healthy airway allows your cells to grow, your brain to function, and your body to move. Without breath, your body quickly shuts down. All of your body’s systems including the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, nervous, and immune systems, depend upon a functioning airway.
Issues like oral restrictions and oral dysfunction can severely impact your ability to breathe — and ultimately, sleep — properly.
The longer you have an impaired airway, the more effects it will cause with each passing year. Disordered breathing has a lot to do with patterns, habits, and compensation for an obstruction.
Airway disorders and disordered breathing hamper the body’s many systems with consequences that affect virtually every aspect of health, including:
